Packaging management for Intercompany and direct delivery

Dawid Kaczmarek Updated by Dawid Kaczmarek

To be able to work with packaging across several companies, it is a requirement that all companies are using the same identification for packaging. Therefore, all companies must have the same packaging ID created, but the setup for the packaging ID can be different in each company, including usage of different item numbers to represent the packaging ID.

When working in an intercompany and/or direct delivery setup, additional settings must be done.

The parameter “Inherit packaging posting in Direct delivery/IC chains” must be set to “Yes” in each company creating intercompany orders. This parameter can be found in [Inventory management / Setup / Shipping packaging management].

NOTE : Standard it is only possible to create ‘Direct delivery’ order lines (intra- or intercompany) for products handled in non-Warehouse enabled warehouses, this doesn’t change with this module.

As a minimum, intercompany customer/vendor, and products, must in each company be setup with the relevant packaging information for the product and delivery address. This setup is used by the update logic if no other, more detailed, setup can be found.

Detailed setup for cross company delivery addresses to be used in intercompany scenarios, can be setup for each address by using the menu “Customer address packaging setup “, “Intercompany customer address packaging setup” or the menu “Intercompany vendor address packaging setup”. If no detailed setup is available, the standard setup for the customer/vendor will be used. See more details in the section ‘Available detailed address setup’.

Example of a 3-step chain (Direct delivery):

Company A = Sales company in France

Company B = Delivery company in Germany

Sales order to end customer delivery address is created in company A using direct delivery and automatic intercompany sales order from company B.

If the origin sales order is marked as Direct delivery (setting on customer), the end customer delivery address is inherited through the chain to the IC sales order.

After creation of the sales order in company A, the intercompany chain will look like this:

Sales order (A) > Intercompany purchase order (A) > Intercompany sales order (B)

Sales order (A) > Intercompany purchase order (A) > Intercompany sales order (B)

When the intercompany sales order in company B is packing slip updated, all orders in the chain are updated automatically and the ordered products are sent directly from company B to the end customer, as ordered by company A. This will include packaging, setup for delivery address and product in each company. Information of packaging ID and quantity is during update, transferred to the orders being updated. This way each company can have a different setup of packaging ID, if the packaging ID is known in all companies.

Example of a 2-step chain (starting from purchase)

In this example the chain is starting from a purchase order in company A.

If company A has several delivery addresses, company B can setup the packaging specifically to each address in company A by using the Intercompany Vendor address packaging setup, or use the general setting for company A.

Example of a 2-step intracompany chain (Direct delivery)

In this example the delivery chain is within the same company, but using direct delivery

If the customer has several delivery addresses, company A can setup the packaging specifically to each customer address, using the Customer address packaging setup, or use the general setting for the vendor.

When delivery update is done for the purchase order, the setting for the purchase will decide the packaging type and quantity of packaging updated to the sales order.
