Update of Expiration Date

Some companies withing the Process Industry area such as Pharma companies have a very cautious approach to the Expiration date of their products and may want to backdate a calculated date of expiration if the calculated date has passed a certain point in the month. To support this functionality automatically a fast tab is available on the ‘Tracking number group’ form to control the wanted logic:

Figure 115: Parameters for update of expiry date during production flow

The fast tab contains a parameter to activate the functionality for the current group, if not activated the expiration date will be calculated form the manufacturing date according to setup for the item.

If activated, the expiration date will be corrected according to setup of the tracking number group.

  • Valid expiry dates calendar:

Only open dates defined in this calendar will be allowed for the expiration date. This will also be the case if the expiration date is being updated manually.

  • Valid date search direction:

This can be selected to be forward or backward in time. This will control the direction in time where the logic will search in the selected calendar for the next valid date. The search will be done based on the expiration date calculated from the manufacturing date.

  • Inherited expiry date action:

This will control how the logic will validate and calculate expire dates, if the expiration date is being inherited from a consumed product to the finished product. The inheriting of expiration date will be triggered by reporting as finished (RAF) a production/batch order with a quantity. The setup can have the following values:

  • Validate inherited date against calendar: This will validate the date against the calendar. The RAF transaction will fail if the inherited date is not allowed according to the calendar.
  • Skip validation of inherited date: This will not do any validation of the inherited date. NOTE : An expiration date not valid according to the calendar can be inherited when using the RAF routines and the expiration date might no longer match a date calculated based on the manufacturing date.
  • Modify the inherited date to match setup: This will correct the inherited expiration date according to the setup selected. NOTE : The expiration date might not match the expiration date calculated from the manufacturing date.

An example for the usage of this feature could be that a company wants to backdate a calculated expiration date to the first day of the week or to the last day of the prior month if the calculated date is not one of these.

The functionality works wherever a batch number is created or updated by dates. You can also combine it with the functionality to automatically update the Manufacturing date by a process during production which is also done via a setup on the Tracking number group.
