Produced items and primary packaging

BOM setup, production journal calculation, and worked example

Purpose

This guide explains how to identify packaging components in a bill of materials and record proportional primary-package quantities when production is reported as finished.

Prerequisites

  • Packaging components exist as released products and package definitions.
  • Each package definition has a Material ID.
  • A BOM and active BOM version exist for the produced item.
  • Users can maintain BOM lines and production journals.

Configure the packaging product

  1. Open the released product representing the packaging, for example a carton.
  2. Locate the ESG Packaging section on the Sales tab.
  3. Set Primary package item to Yes.
  4. Select the Primary package material.
  5. Save the product.

Configure the BOM

Mark packaging BOM lines
  1. Open the applicable BOM.
  2. Add or select the packaging-item line.
  3. Confirm Primary package item is Yes.
  4. Save, approve, and activate the BOM according to the normal process.

Copied value: When a released product is already marked as a primary-package item, the setting is copied when the BOM line is initialized. Confirm it before activation.

Enable calculation on the BOM version

  1. Open the BOM version in the BOM composition page.
  2. On the General tab, locate the ESG Packaging group.
  3. Set Calc primary package to Yes.
  4. Save the BOM version.

Current behavior: The setting is copied to the production order when initialized. Journal records are selected from production BOM lines marked Primary package item. Maintain both controls consistently; the BOM-line flag is decisive for generated records in the current version.

Production journal process

  1. Create the production order from the configured BOM version.
  2. Verify the packaging lines on the production BOM.
  3. Create or open the report-as-finished production journal.
  4. Enter the good quantity.
  5. Review the Primary packaging area.
  6. Correct source master data if packaging is missing or inaccurate.
  7. Post the journal through the normal process.

Quantity calculated for the reported good quantity.

Unit

Unit copied from the production BOM line.

Worked example: cartons for produced cereal

Scenario: A production order is scheduled for 100 boxes of cereal. The BOM requires one carton per finished box. Only 40 good units are reported in the first journal.

Package quantity = calculated BOM quantity x reported good quantity / scheduled production quantity.

Expected result: 100 x 40 / 100 = 40 cartons in the production journal. The corresponding material basis is 10 kg of cardboard when the package definition contains 0.25 kg per carton.

Operational guidance

  • Correct packaging setup at the source rather than routinely editing calculated transaction records.
  • Create journal lines after the correct BOM setup is in place.
  • Test both full and partial report-as-finished quantities.
  • Avoid double counting if the same package is registered through both production and shipping processes. Define clearly which records support each reporting purpose.
