Taxes in Transfer Orders – Cepheo Shipping & Packaging Management

Peter Kure Bek-Thorngreen Updated by Peter Kure Bek-Thorngreen

Overview

Cepheo Shipping & Packaging Management follows the standard Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations tax engine for calculating and posting taxes related to transfer orders. When enabled, tax is evaluated during shipment and/or receipt of the transfer order—aligning with Microsoft’s standard inventory movement tax principles.

In scenarios where your organization is required to post VAT or use‑tax for movements between warehouses (for example, bonded → free), the module relies entirely on the standard tax configuration, tax groups, item groups, and Advanced Tax setup.

How tax calculation works

  1. Tax groups and rule matching
Tax determination is handled by D365FO’s standard rules (inventory business process, warehouse locations, tax groups, and tax codes).
  2. Tax creation during transfer posting
    • Shipment: A tax transaction is typically created when stock leaves the shipping warehouse.
    • Receipt: Additional tax postings may occur on receipt, depending on your tax configuration.
  3. Auto‑Receive
When the Auto receive option is used, the system completes the shipment and receipt in a single process.
As of the latest update, tax is now correctly calculated and posted also in auto‑receive scenarios.

Important limitation (Disclaimer)

Taxes are not supported for packaging material. Cepheo Shipping & Packaging Management does not calculate or post any tax related to packaging items or packaging material movements. Only inventory items relevant to the transfer order itself are evaluated for tax.
